Reasons we do this job  Number 4 An elderly lady walks into the shop with her stick. “ I need a new bra. I have bad arthritis. I struggle.” “Wouldn’t you rather go braless? You might find it easier” “Definitely not, I wouldn’t be seen dead without my bra”. We sit lady down in the fitting room. With kindness we help the lady undress. Because we know our stuff, we quickly find a bra, yes one that fits but also one she will manage or her husband can do up.  We know she will be sat down a lot so comfort is an absolute necessity, and we know that for this lady a bra is about a preservation of her dignity and her identity . We take our time to help her dress. She has lost her confidence a bit walking, so we ask her if she would like us to accompany her back to her husband who is waiting in the car. Yes please. It’s all part of the service. This lady in her eighties has made a special journey just to see us. If it was my mum, I’d want someone to look out for her.   A bra is important to a woman for so many different reasons.

With minimum of fuss we produce bra. No need to see our lady topless. We fasten it up and adjust the straps. After a certain amount of ‘swooping and scooping’ (by lady not us) “My God this fits” “I am not spilling out” “This feels really comfy” Lady puts her top on “My God, I look slimmer, I look younger””Wow” Big beam spreads across her face. And ours. “You look amazing”   This is why we do this job

Reasons we do this job Number 2 Young girl shuffles into the shop with mum. Head down. Arms clutched around her chest. She has big boobs and feels really awkward, We coax her into the fitting room. Explain what is going to happen. ‘Please take your top off and leave your bra on” Girl looks as though she wishes the ground would swallow her up and is on the verge of tears. Our hearts break just a little. Yes we know you would rather be in Victoria’s Secrets with your mates. Because we know our stuff, a bra is produced with minimum fuss. Try this on, we won’t see you without your bra. Bra is fitted on. Girl peeps at herself in the mirror. Still shy but maybe a little smile starts twitching at the corner of her mouth. Here try this one on. Gosh your boobs look amazing in that. Slowly we see the transformation of an ungainly, shuffling youngster into a beautiful young lady, head held high, big smile on her face. Yes you have boobs and wow. Victoria’s Secrets we might not be, but we know how to make a lady feel good in a bra. This is why we do this job.

Reasons we do this job Number One Lady walks into our fitting room. Whispers to us ‘I’ve had breast cancer, my boobs are odd’ our hearts break just a little. No one should feel ‘odd ‘ ‘deformed’, whatever or feel they have to apologise to us. Because we know our stuff we know which bras are best for our customer, which bra style to go for, even more importantly which size is correct. We try a few styles on, no fuss, no pressure. Lady stares at herself in mirror, tears rolling down her face. “I look like I used to look” “I can’t believe it” Our hearts break just a little bit more, tears well up. This is why we do our job. 

Most new customers who walked through the door this weekend thought they were a B,C or D cup. It never ceases to amaze me how we are still so badly educated about an absolute staple of our wardrobes. I do blame the chain stores, one in particular which champions its bra fitting service. I had a lady in over the weekend who told me she could never get a bra to fit properly, the band was making her very sore, the wires dug into her and she had four boobs which could be seen through her clothes. This well known store had told her she was a 40DD. When she took her top off I could see what she meant the wires of the bra were digging into breast tissue, the band was offering no support and the cups hardly covered any of her boobs. No wonder the poor lady was in such discomfort.She was refitted to a 36HH, in some bras she was a 38H or double HH. We must have tried on about 20 bras but it's important to try on different shapes and makes to see what fits best and more importantly what is suitable for the customers needs. Such a change in size does feel weird at first, the wire is in a different place and the cups actually cover the boobs. I also explained to her the different shapes of cups and styles which, if you have never had a bra fitting before, can be a revelation.When she put her top on with her new bra on, she immediately looked younger, her posture improved, her boobs were in the right place, not hanging round her waist, she rediscovered her shape, a defined waist which made her look slimmer.All credit to her husband who sat patiently through the process, but he was so fed up about her complaining about her bras that I think he would have sat there all day so his wife could find a comfortable fitting bra. We all have boobs and a comfortable well fitting supportive bra should be a given but sadly it so very often is not.
